A jumped cable is where one of the cables connected to your garage door becomes displaced or slips off its designated pulley. This often happens when the garage door is in the process of opening or closing and the cable becomes loose and is subjected to too much tension. This will cause the garage door to hang down from the side.
What Causes a Sideways Garage Door?
A sideways garage door can occur when there’s an issue with the door’s alignment, tracks, or the cables that support its movement. Common causes include:
Misaligned Tracks
If the tracks guiding the garage door become bent or misaligned, it can cause the door to move unevenly. This can result in the door jumping off its tracks and shifting sideways.Worn or Broken Rollers
The rollers that help guide your garage door can wear out or break over time. If the rollers can’t glide smoothly along the tracks, the door may become stuck or move incorrectly, leading to a sideways position.Jumped Cable
One of the most common causes of a sideways garage door is a jumped cable. Cables are responsible for helping to lift and lower the door evenly. If a cable slips out of its track or becomes frayed, it can throw the door off balance, causing one side to move differently than the other.
